Men's Health

Men need to look after their own health in the same way they look after their car. Having an annual ‘warrant of fitness’ health check is a sensible way of keeping on top of any health issues such as blood pressure, cholesterol, heart problems, cancer or hearing difficulties. Important issues in men's health include:

Heart health

Heart disease remains the number one killer of men in New Zealand. Early detection of raised blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes remains at the forefront of preventing early death. Screening is recommended for all men from the age of 45, or 10 years earlier if you are Maori or Polynesian, have a family history of smoke.

We recognise that stopping smoking is pretty tough and that staying smoke-free is even tougher. Our nurses are trained in lifestyle conselling, are are here to support you through the early stages. Recent advances in medical treatment can also make it easier, and any of the doctors would be happy to discuss this.

Prostate health

Prostate cancer is the commonest cancer in men, and about 2,500 New Zealand men are diagnosed with the disease each year. Prostate cancer remains a complex and controversial area of medicine. Some cancers grow and spread quickly, while others are much more slow-growing. For that reason screening for prostate cancer is best discussed on an individual basis, although regular PSA tests are a useful means of early detection. Both Grant and Marshall have special interests in men's health and would be happy to discuss this.
